Woman, 45, dies in New Year's morning crash on SW Freeway feeder road

A 45-year-old woman died on New Year's morning after crashing her SUV into a light pole off the Southwest Freeway feeder road.

Victor Senties, a Houston Police Department spokesman, said the driver exited the freeway at Bellaire and then struck a light pole.

The accident, the city's first fatal crash in 2016, shut down the freeway's frontage road for several hours on Friday morning.

Senties said it was "too early to tell" if alcohol or drugs may be a factor in the crash.
