After ringing in the new year with a comedy show, "ForePlay," based on the idea of breaking up and starting over, the Wilmington comedy and filmmaking team Fake Brothers Productions -- Patrick Basquill and Caylan McKay, with Ethan Sigmon, who lives in Los Angeles -- has segued into 2016 with a new show that combines scripted comedy, improv and silly songs into something called "Beasts, with Two Backs."
The original production is running at City Stage, a historic home for such erstwhile Wilmington comedy troupes as The Other Side, Changing Channels and the Comically Impaired, and it's not a play, exactly, or a musical or a sketch show or a long-form improv, although it has elements of all of these. "Beasts" can be a bit of a glorious mess, at times, but there's ultimately enough going on -- and, more importantly, it's funny enough -- to be worth checking out.
Admission is a roll the dice -- literally. If you toss unlucky 7 you'll have to pay full price ($5), but every other result gets you in for less, or even free. It's a sign of the absurdity to come, albeit inspired absurdity with occasionally dark underpinnings. "Beasts, with Two Backs" touches on everything from daddy issues and breakups to the fear of death.
The loosely plotted show involves Basquill stealing the phone of McKay's dad, played by Adrian Monte (formerly of The Other Side), so they can order him a bunch of sweets for some reason. It's endearingly nonsensical, while turning on the insecurities that come with being in your 20s, from making your parents proud (and being disappointed by them) to figuring out what to do with your life.
