Driver error may be responsible for fatal Etobicoke crash, police say
Toronto police say driver error may be responsible for an Etobicoke crash that killed a 42-year-old GTA man this morning.
The accident occurred near Lake Shore Boulevard and Brown’s Line shortly before 5:30 a.m.
Police say the victim was ejected from his Jeep following the accident and was pinned under the grill.
Const. Clint Stibbe said the victim was the lone occupant of the
vehicle and was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The circumstances that led up to the crash are not known but police say preliminary reports suggest driver error may be the cause.
“There doesn’t appear to be any attempt at braking on the way in so it looks like that car came in at a fairly high rate of speed and didn’t attempt to stop prior to the collision," Stibbe said.
Stibbe also noted that the road conditions were less than perfect.
"It was damp this morning, somewhat icy as well on the cars," he said.
The coroner and a collision reconstruction team were called in to investigate.
Police are asking any possible witnesses to contact investigators.
“If you did see ... (an) SUV anywhere in the area of the 427 and Evan’s Avenue south toward Brown’s Line and the Lake Shore, any sort of erratic driving behaviour, we are asking that they contact police at 416-808-1800," Stibbe said.
